synopsis:

A naked torso bloodied child, Luchito, advances along a road, leaving behind the horror of what he has experienced, his family has been massacred before his eyes. Matías, a puppeteer, meets the child during his journey going across towns with his puppet show. Together, they set out on the road to Las Acacias in search of Stella, the Nurse.

Matías, Luchito and Stella, three perspectives and three different experiences in the context of fear. “We live under fear, but we are not obliged to live with fear,” says Matías, summing up the tense situation in which the characters are immersed. The Luchito’s family massacre perpetrator is on his trail, as the child is the only surviving witness.

Matias’ beliefs in puppet’s magic and fantasy, and Stella’s practical approach to life will greatly help them to do the unthinkable in order to keep him safe. Luchito, who has been muted by trauma, must overcome the fear to regain his voice, and step by step he will achieve it with the assistance of Matias and his puppets. Matías, on his part, will exceed his own limits to save the child, through a painful discovery of a world in which dreaming is no longer possible.

why it matters?

An indigenous Caucano once said “We live the consequences of a war that isn’t ours, a war we don’t even understand”, this quote became the seed for this project. This film seeks to delve into the human tragedy of war (not exclusively the Colombian war) and the grasp of fear for those who live inside of it everyday. Matias The Puppeteer’s aesthetic is realistic, emphatic, and with a clear message that reaches all viewers. Portrating through Matias’ story how, in a land where joy is condemned, someone is willing to give his all to bring children’s fantasy back to life.
